Civil War Photos | Alexander Gardner | Library of Congress

The Library of Congress has released these hauntingly beautiful photos taken of the Civil War by Alexander Gardner. This was considered one of the first times a photographer documented a battlefield before the bodies were cleared. WARNING A TAD GRAPHIC

LINCOLN!

More info here.

(thanks Kate!)

  1. He and Mathew Brady were some of my first favorite artists. My dad was a photographer and I a history buff when I was young. He has these 2 old books, each a couple inches thick documenting mostly their battlefield photographs from the American Civil War. There was some controversy though as they both admitted to arranging dead bodies for aesthetic reasons. There is a good series of late 1800’s side show/carnival/freak show photos I think Brady did. Solid post!
