On Sunday evening I ventured down to BOSI Contemporary on Orchard St. for my friend Dean Dempsey’s closing party. Dean is a photographer and visual artist. In my opinion, he’s taken the self portrait into a different world entirely, creating stories using primarily empty spaces and himself.
Upon arrival at BOSI Contemporary, I was met by the most lovely of hosts.
Dean’s art is weird, alien like, and interesting, and the performance he hosted was equally so. Performed by Johnny Fingaz, a cross dressed FTM in a dapper suit and Macy Rodman, a scantily clad drag queen, we jumped a rope they turned for what seemed like hours in the middle of the gallery.
BOSI was 1/3 full of borderline homeless people there for the free beer and wine, 1/3 friends of Dean (hard to differentiate from the homeless looking “gallery flies”), and 1/3 douchebaggy art people that can find meaning in a dirty tissue. That being said I enjoyed the exhibit but was ready to head to 169 bar for some all night happy hour drinks!
Before heading out to 169 Bar (where everyone subsequently got kicked out), we dilly dallied on the stoop like the true art aficionados we really are.
I left around 11 and everyone else got booted shortly after for..well…see above. It was my first time going to an art gallery event and I have to say I had a pretty good time. I was shocked at how many people were wearing orthopedic shoes with suits, but who am I to judge.
