This baby sails from China holding 15,000 containers and a 207′ deck beam. The crew-size: 13 people on a ship longer than a US aircraft carrier (which has a crew of 5,000). The 207′ beam means it cannot fit through the Panama or Suez Canals . It is strictly transpacific and cruise speed: 31 knots. The goods arrive 4 days before the typical container ship (18-20 knots) on a China -to- California run.. So this behemoth is hugely competitive when carrying perishable goods. Read More

These Shanghai writers have a very distinct style. It seems like a collision of Western inspired graffiti mixed with Eastern culture. Target Fined $600,000 for lead paint toys

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is fining Target $600,000, for allegedly violating the federal lead paint ban on toys. The federal lead paint ban for toys has been in place since 1978. CPSC staff alleged that Target failed to take adequate action to ensure that no toys or children’s products would bear lead-containing paint, thereby creating a risk of lead poisoning and adverse health effects to children.

When people think about pollution they think of two places: Los Angeles & China. China manufactures everything on the cheap and dirty and now it is affecting their population. Death rates from cancer rose 19% in cities and 23% in rural areas in 2006, compared to 2005, according to official Chinese media, although they did not give exact figures. The health burden has a huge economic price as well. The cost of cancer treatment has reached almost 100 billion yuan a year ($14.6 billion), accounting for 20 percent of China’s medical expenditure, according to Chinese media. Read More
