Anti Columbus/Capitalism March San Francisco (VIDEO/PICTURES)

So its Columbus Day weekend and today around 3PM Anti Columbus/Capitalism protesters took the streets in downtown San Francisco to protest the celebrating of Columbus invading and the massacring of native Americans which originated here and the raping of their land. I personally never understood how Columbus was someone who was looked at as a awesome dude or something nor did I understand how someone could “celebrate” him. I don’t see how anyone could agree with what he did and his way he went upon doing things to the natives. Like giving the natives small pox infested blankets to cause mass outbreak and cause mass amounts of deaths so it was easier to take over the land. So about 200 protesters using Black Bloc militant tactics (see video below to learn about Black Bloc) stormed the streets. Police responded quickly waiting around hours before the march even started. It seemed that SFPD was not having it today. Most likely because it’s Fleet Week in San Francisco and there was a bunch of tourists standing around looking in the sky while planes did tricks and made SF sound like a war zone. Fleet Week is a United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and United States Coast Guard tradition in which active military ships recently deployed in overseas operations in a variety of major cities for one week.

Blac Block Introduction

The march got real, really fast. I’ve been to protests and marches all around the country and have never seen something escalade as fast as it did today. Oakland and SF is known for its direct impact and aggressive marches though (which I personally think is awesome because I don’t see how holding a sign asking huge cooperations to stop being useful).

Protesters smashed BMW car windows, slashed BMW car tires, heaved wine bottles full of colourful paint at cops as well as glass bottles, as well as road flares. Paint was thrown onto bank windows and the energy was very intense. The police and protesters clashed as protesters tired to take over Market Street (a main street in San Fran) but before protesters could even get to Market street, police charged at a street intersection that lead to Market. Everyone ran in all directions as police came in with batons swinging and grabbing anyone they could. The crowd dispersed very quickly but cops arrested random people in a few mile radius of who they thought was involved (basically anyone wearing black.) There was a total of 20 or so arrests today.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Police arrested approximately 22 people during an anti-colonial, anti-capitalist march in San Francisco’s Financial District Saturday afternoon.

Officials say that at about 2:50 p.m. a group of protesters gathered at Justin Herman Plaza and started marching west bound on Market Street. The group, a number of them wearing black clothing and masks covering their faces, disrupted traffic by walking into the street.

Officers arrived and warned the protesters that they did not have a permit to march and were causing a public safety hazard (THEY YELLED THIS AT THE BACK OF THE MARCH). Some of the protesters then threw flares and bags of paint containing rocks at the officers. Several officers were hit and covered with paint. No serious injuries were sustained.

Approximately 22 people were arrested on one or more of the following charges: conspiracy, riot, refusing to obey a lawful order from a peace officer and resisting, delaying and obstructing a peace officer, and assault and battery on a peace officer.

A search of the arrested suspects’ backpacks revealed that many were armed with hammers, an ice pick, flares, more bags of paint containing rocks, and other weapons.

Police say the suspects vandalized vehicles and businesses as they walked. The windows of a Starbucks were smashed and one driver had his tires slashed while another car suffered a broken window.

  1. Much like Columbus you don’t want to share a blanket during fleet week…it is most likely covered in seamen. ba dum pa!

  2. Strangest thing. Peaceful street and they suddenly start smashing windows and cars. It was a pretty pathetic way to make a point. There were bystanders (some pregnant women) caught on the street when they started.
